Commentary
This clip is from the opera “Tomorrow There Will Be… ” composed by Aleš Březina (2004). It describes the history of the trial of Milada Horáková, a representative of the pre-war National Socialists and a leftist democratic politician who was executed in 1950. The text of the opera consists of excerpts from historical documents – newspaper articles and court records.
The fact that this show trial became the subject of an opera shows how central this historical phenomenon was in Czech society as well as the importance of the subjects discussed.
The artistic techniques used then show how a given event was mostly viewed. The modern assessment of the 1950s describes it as a dramatic and tragic phase of history, with clearly defined sides in the conflict.
